Review Knipmode March 2016

The March issue of Knipmode is all about top trends must-have items for spring/summer 2016. At least, according to the editor's introduction. After reading the magazine from cover to cover and over again I find the content of this issue more classic than fashionable.

Palazzo pants, midi skirt, kimono

Maxi dress, flared pants, jumpsuit

Oversized shirt, 7/8 pants, trenchcoat

Also in the must-have collection: a blazer, a shift dress, culottes, a boho blouse, a vest, a cardigan and a denim shirtdress. A bunch of useful, but not jaw dropping patterns.

Any personal must-haves? Yes, I think I'll give pants #5 a go. It has good style lines, a nice curved waistband and a back leg seam, providing extra fitting opportunities.

Same pants as the green crepe, now in stretch denim

The bonus spring special is sponsored by a big fabric supplier. It's a vehicle to showcase new fabric designs that often overwhelm the garments and usually are not my cup of tea. Looking at the line drawings I can see the attraction of some of the patterns, like tunic 105.

Back to the regular issue. The midi skirt #8 (pictured above in Vlisco print) is a maybe for me. I'm not utterly convinced by the design with two flat pleats on the right side and a box pleat on the left side. There is a risk of the asymmetry ending up looking unintentional. (Below the shorter version)

When the right fabric comes along I'll give this kimono sleeve shirt a try. Gardeners can't have enough simple shirts!

I saved the best for last.

This DKNY inspired skirt (#27) prompted mr Foxgloves to donate one of his pinstripe jackets (one of many that started out as suits, but survived the matching pants) so that I could do that 'Great British Sewing Bee- refashion thing'. I may take him up on his offer, for the fun of trying.

My favourite pattern-of-the month must be this dress:

I've already earmarked a pretty cotton sateen for this stunning pattern!

What would you make from this issue?

  1. I like the dress you've chosen - looks nice on the model. Not sure about anything else this time though.

    1. I agree, for now. It will be fun to evaluate at the end of the year. Maybe in a few months time I'll feel the urge to make a pattern that is not on my list now!

  3. What I like the most about this issue is the fabric of that midi skirt :) The DKNY knockoff skirt looks good too, but shouldn't be too hard to make from an existing pencil skirt pattern so I guess this issue is not for me

    2. Yes, I love that fabric too! Isn't it great that Vlisco changed from selling 6 yard cuts only to offering 2/4/6 yards? The old policy kept me from buying for a long time!

  4. I too like the dress you have chosen and the kimono tee shirt as that would be so handy as a TNT for a quick make.

    1. The kimono tee shirt will also be great for using up scraps by matching different fabrics. Not sure about the piping made from stretch bias tape, we'll see about that.

  5. I love the skirt with a front slit, the jumpsuit and the shortjurk #22. Since I am in Belgium right now, I'll head off to a magazine stand after work to buy this issue :)

  6. I love that last dress too! It's got everything I like: stand up collar, extended shoulder, fitted bodice, midriff band, wide gored skirt, POCKETS!!! I'm so in trouble (I'm supposed to be waiting for the Mai Petite issue, as you may remember from an earlier conversation)

    1. For all petite and tall sewists I hope the May special will be an extraordinarily good one!
By the way, did you ever try the custom-fit patterns from Lekala or BootstrapFashion? Perhaps you can find a similar dress! You just enter your measurements and ten minutes later your made-to-measure pattern is in your mailbox. The patterns are cheap, so maybe it's worth a try?

  7. I really like dress nr. 21. Is it for knit? I think that is what the symbol in the overview means.

What about dress 12, Is it for jersey?

    1. Well, Knipmode uses the same symbol for 4-way stretch jersey as for fabrics with a tiny bit of stretch! Very confusing. For dress 21 a 96% cotton/4% lycra mix was used, dress 12 is made from stretch denim. No additional specifications about the amount of stretch.

  8. Spot on review of this issue! That dress is on my wishlist too. I have some navy cotton eyelet that I think would be just the ticket. Now...if I could just find my mojo....

    1. Breaking! Today I was at a market where Knipmode had a stand. They always have some samples on display, and although they did not bring the dress, they brought the fabric! It felt similar to tana lawn but with a tiny bit of stretch, hardly noticeable. I suppose cotton eyelet will work fine!
